The origins of A Course in Miracles may be traced back once again to the venture between two individuals, Helen Schucman and Bill Thetford, both of whom were outstanding psychologists and researchers. The course’s inception occurred in the first 1960s when Schucman, who had been a medical and research psychiatrist at Columbia University’s School of Physicians and Surgeons, started to experience some inner dictations. She described these dictations as originating from an internal voice that identified it self as Jesus Christ. Schucman initially resisted these activities, but with Thetford’s support, she started transcribing the messages she received.
Over a period of seven decades, Schucman transcribed what would become A Program in Wonders, amounting to three amounts: the Text, the Book for a course in miracles podcast Students, and the Manual for Teachers. The Text lays out the theoretical basis of the class, elaborating on the primary ideas and principles. The Workbook for Students contains 365 instructions, one for every day of the year, made to steer the reader via a day-to-day training of applying the course’s teachings. The Information for Teachers provides further guidance on how best to realize and train the concepts of A Program in Wonders to others.
One of the key subjects of A Program in Miracles is the notion of forgiveness. The course teaches that correct forgiveness is the main element to inner peace and awareness to one’s divine nature. Based on their teachings, forgiveness isn’t simply a ethical or ethical training but a basic shift in perception.
